[+] A Message from the Course Director

Knowledge of how to use digital technology is essential today. Understanding how the technology works, and how it can be applied, is a passport to a successful career.

This is the cornerstone of the Computing programmes offered by Goldsmiths: innovative application of computing technology, underpinned by rigorous study of the technology itself. The Computing and Information Systems degree provides a solid grounding in computer technology, particularly software, and strengthens this by exposing you to its application in the world of business and information systems. The Creative Computing degree gives a similar grounding in technology-also including hardware- and focuses on its application in creative contexts, such as music, visual arts and computer games.

Both programmes are designed to enable you to become a technically competent user of computing technology, but they give you more than that: they give you the potential to become a developer, innovator and leader in your field. They also provide a path to a variety of higher degrees that can further differentiate you to today's competitive employment market, or provide the basis for a career in research.

Computing and Information Systems is a solid, thorough course that provides all of the necessary components for success in enterprise computing. The course is mathematically based, and from this the concepts underlying modern computer technology are studied. In addition to core courses in programming, databases and internet computing, optional courses allow you to focus on specialisms such as artificial intelligence. A project gives you the opportunity to develop an extended piece of individual work that can be added to your portfolio to show potential employers. Many students tell us they find the project both the most challenging and the most inspiring part of the degree.

Creative Computing is a unique course that combines the development of artistic creativity and technical computer expertise, to produce the next generation of creative computing professionals. The focus of the course is the creative thinking which grows out of the juxtaposition of science and art. This programme is aimed at those who want to work at the intersection of technology and art, in web development, animation, games, mobile and other creative software applications. It is also appropriate for artists, musicians, film-makers and other who wish to apply their creative thinking to original software development, and for computing professionals who wish to include a creative component in their work.

We look forward to welcoming you, whichever programme you choose.
